A Few Recent Photos

Here’s a few photos I’ve been sitting on for a few weeks now and finally had a little bit of time to get them uploaded to share with you all.

The first one of Zoe was taken Aug. 16, then the two of Abby’s first day of school were taken Aug. 19, and the last one of Zoe was taken Sept. 3rd.

Prayer really works, try it and see!

I’ve found this true so many number of times in my life and today was yet another example of how God answers prayers.

Zoe doesn’t go more than 1-2 hours without waking up hungry with sometimes at night being the exception, then it may extend to 2 1/2 – 3 hours.  Well she had been sleeping for at least 1 1/2 hours before leaving out the door, so she was due for a bottle at any time.
I was in a scurry trying to gather everything so I could take her to her appointment at Children’s Hospital and on time.  Her diaper bag was packed, had a bottle on standby, and even a spare burp cloth and a fresh diaper on her, we were set and ready!

Well, when I got there, I realized that somehow I managed to run off and forget her diaper bag that had everything in it!  I knew this was sure to become a disaster at any time resulting in her screaming crying because she had woken up and realized it had been way too long since she last ate.  (Trust me, she does this at home regularly).

Half of me, ok, all of me wanted to just get back in the van and go home and reschedule and avoid the disaster.  But instead I decided to ask God for His help and that He help me through this since I was so ill prepared and needed it if we were going to make it through this.
Well, we sat in the waiting room 40 minutes and Zoe continued sleeping peacefully despite the loud closing doors and chaos of a child’s waiting room.

We were called in for the exam and I thought “if it’s going to happen, it’ll happen here”.  I had to strip her down to her diaper and then the lady had to put the gel on her back and examine her spine with the ultrasound and Zoe did a lot of squirming.  But sure enough, we finished the exam and I got her re-dressed, and we made it all the way back home and not once did she cry, not even for a second.

It is God’s hand in even the smallest of matters such as this that gives me my faith and strength, because as busy as He is, He still takes the time to answer even the small prayers when we ask.  I’m truly grateful I serve a God that loves us this much and helps us in even the most trivial of situations.

Rebelling against God – What you’re missing out on

When we rebel against God, do you ever wonder what it costs you?  As I read on through the Old Testament, I began to notice a pattern of actions the people chose and the consequences when they rebelled.
A few scenarios are:

  • Adam and Eve - By rebelling against what God had told them not to do, they went from paradise to the labor, pain, and toils of this world.   They also would’ve lived forever, but God told them they will face death and everyone after them as well.
  • The Israelites – I can’t list all of the instances without doing a lot of research, but shortly after God lead them from slavery in Egypt, they turned away and began to worship idols.  God wanted to kill them for it, but Moses interceded and instead (I think) 12,000 of them died.  Not too long after that, that generation was punished again and told they’d die and not see the promised land.  A couple of books later in the Bible I noticed they had gone from 600,000 to 300,000 from the time they had left Egypt because God kept striking them with plagues due to their repeated rebellion.
  • Moses – He didn’t get to go into the promised land because of his rebellion against God.  God allowed him to see it and then he died shortly after that.  All of those years working towards leading His people there and he didn’t get to enter it.
  • Aaron – He died on Mount Hor and was stripped of his robe as it was given to his son because of his rebellion and disobedience.
  • King Saul – God took his reign as king from him for being disobedient.  Saul watched as a young man named David became his predecessor, which David was just his harp player and then became his armor bearer.  Saul watched as David gradually began to rise up and eventually take his place on the throne in Israel.

There’s so many more and one thing I also think about is what if Moses just refused in the first place?  What if David saw Goliath and said: “No way, I’m going back to tend to my father’s sheep!”  ”He’s your problem, not mine!”
We see time and time again the consequences of rebellion and many great examples of the rewards for obedience.  I caught myself saying “Dang those Israelites just kept on turning away!!! What were they thinking??”, but the fact is every one of us does the exact same thing.

How many times do we find ourselves not praying, not reading the Bible, and not taking time out each day to spend with God?  It’s easy to focus on Him when we’re facing a difficult situation, but when times are good, we quickly set that aside.

At what cost does that come at?  What did God have for us and was going to bless us with, but withheld it and said we’ll never see it since we didn’t listen to Him?  Maybe that’s why some of us are in the situations we’re in and to think that God may have had something so much greater for us, but we turned away from Him.

A god who’s cute, loving, forgiving, and not judgmental

As I continue reading through the Old Testament of the Bible, I realize how crucial it is for Christians to also read it.  Many people think that the Old Testament isn’t relevant anymore since the New Testament and nothing could be further from the truth.

One of the things I realize is how many people think God is ONLY loving and forgiving and discredit the fact He is a righteous judge and a jealous God.  As I read through Leviticus and Numbers, I saw God express time and time again how furious He becomes at our disobedience.  That is because He has done so much for us and given us so much, yet we somehow think He owes us more or something better.  It is a huge insult to Him just as it is if you gave someone a really nice gift that you worked hard to earn the money for because you love them and they tell you it’s crap and I want something better.

You also become furious at how ungrateful that person is, yet somehow we think God shouldn’t and instead should just forgive us and love us anyways.
Just as a parent disciplines their child when they do wrong, God also does the same.  We idolize money, cars, houses, jobs, and other materialistic things, yet when things go bad and it all comes crumbling down, some curse God for it since “He’s just out to get me and wants to just punish me in some cruel way”, yet they have not given any regard to Him for a long time.

God wants our heart, for us to love Him and He love us and give us what’s best for us, not what we think is best.  He displays that several times throughout the Bible and in the first few books of it, you see how the Israelites kept trying to choose what they thought was good for them and indeed it wasn’t.  Our understanding of God is very limited and He sees the dangers ahead and tries to protect us from them just as a parent withholds their child from entering a busy street because He loves us.  Sometimes He has to “spank” us because we don’t listen, just like the child who runs into the street or parking lot anyways.

Our laws, jobs, and society don’t let us just do anything we want without repercussions when we break the rules so why do we somehow think God wouldn’t do the same?  We loose our freedom, our privileges, our jobs, our possessions, etc. if we disobey the laws of our government, who are often driven by corrupt agendas or selfish motives.  But a sovereign, incorruptible,  just God we seem to have a problem with ruling and judging us when it is indeed for our own good.

How does that make any sense?

Mixed denominations and who’s right?

We’ve all seen it at some time or another, one church/denomination declaring the other one is wrong and their doctrine is right.  And the thing is, usually the majority of the congregation will always stand on the side of whatever denomination is posted above the doorway of their church and in some cases, even separate themselves from others as if they were demons.

I’ve never quite understood this myself, because when you question them, several of them will know and can even quote what their doctrine teaches, but they snip and paste little bits of scripture to form their conclusions.  Satan did this same thing when tempting Christ by trying to contort what the scripture says.  See Matthew 4:1-11.
I’ve also found that often the individuals have never read it for themselves (not just the 1-2 verses, but the chapter/verses as a whole) with an open mind and open heart to see just what it really says.  They will often answer “Oh yeah, I’ve read the Bible” and some of them have, but some of them have by reading books about the Bible, the preacher’s sermons and ideas on what that particular verse means,  and through commentaries, but NOT the actual word written in the pages of it.

So what provoked this you might wonder?  Well, I remember some years ago some friends visited the church I was attending with me and it just so happens we were taking the Lord’s Supper that service.  I had never heard of it, but they believed in “closed communion”, which basically means if you’re not a member of that church, then you can’t participate.
I knew this was in no way right and never had read in the Bible where it says “Judge one another to determine if they are worthy to for-take in the Lord’s Supper, and if they aren’t on the church roster, they are unworthy”.  The closest thing I found was in Genesis and it said they must be circumcised, so I hope that isn’t their reference since that would be awkward checking for.

After a quick Google search, I found this: http://www.baptistpillar.com/bd0411.htm, which explains why they do so.  The part that gets me is where they mention the letter from Paul to the church at Corinth and the divisions among themselves (much like denominations?) and they use this as a reason to separate themselves.  They then reference http://read.ly/1Cor11.18.NASB, which when read by itself, would indeed seem to confirm this ideology.  But when you read that whole chapter at one time and especially starting with verse 23, you will see it’s taken out of context and he’s actually condemning having “separate” communions and that each individual should judge themselves.

Also notice how they never use more than a verse or two here and there and not reference a whole chapter or book.  That’s because if they did read it as a whole, it would contradict them.

What’s my point?
READ IT YOURSELF!! Not a commentary, not a book on what the Bible says, but instead read it for yourself and see what you find.  If it doesn’t make sense to you, pray about it and ask God to give you understanding and find a version that is easy to read.  Yes, KJV is a good version and still closest to the actual original text, but if you can’t read it or understand it, what good does it do you?  NONE!

Who was Melchizedek?

MELCHIZEDEK [mel KIZ eh deck] (king of righteousness)
We first hear of him as the first king of Salem (Jerusalem) and first priest of the Most High God Gen. 14:18–20, but is later mentioned in Ps. 110:4; Heb. 5:6–11; 6:20–7:28.

Here’s some interesting things about Him:

  • Melchizedek presented bread and wine to Abraham, demonstrating friendship and religious kinship.  Remember Jesus and His 12 disciples?
  • He bestowed a blessing on Abraham in the name of El Elyon (“God Most High”), and praised God for giving Abraham a victory in battle (Gen. 14:18–20).
  • Abraham gave a tithe (10%) to Him in Gen. 14:20.
  • In Psalm 110, a messianic psalm written by David, Melchizedek is seen as being like Christ.  (Compare Psalm 110 to Matt. 22:43). This theme is repeated in the Book of Hebrews, where both Melchizedek and Christ are considered kings of righteousness and peace.
  • The picture really comes together when you read Hebrews 7:1-20, especially in verse 3 which reads “Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.”(referring to Melchizedek)

This means that no one knew of His beginning, nor His end, or anything about His genealogy, which is very strange considering he did not inherit his position by succession, but instead by none other than the Mighty King.

Some would argue this wasn’t Jesus Christ Himself, but according to what the scripture says about Him and the fact Jesus did indeed appear in the old testimate (see Daniel 3:25, although I recommend reading from verse 8 ), I personally am led to believe Melchizedek and Jesus are one in the same.

After all, according to the statement made in John 1:1-4, Jesus has existed forever with God (thus the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit), so why would it surprise some or be inconceivable that the Son did indeed visit His creation before the start of the New Testimate?

My personal theory is this (I can’t prove nor disprove this theory), God in human form, such as in Genesis when He was walking in the cool of the day to find Adam and Eve, is as Jesus Christ, the Son.  I think God the Father almost never leaves His throne except in one occasion I know of where Moses asked to see Him and God said it would kill him instantly if He did show Himself to Moses, yet He did pass by him in a cloud and Moses came down from the mountain glowing.

I think God in human form has always been as the Son, just like the Holy Spirit never takes on any other role, but is described as being “unseen as the wind”.  Just a theory though.

What are your thoughts?

My Little Photographer

I wondered a while back what a child would photograph if given a camera.  So today we found out when we got our 4-year-old daughter a cheap digital camera.
I guess 4 years isn’t the most coordinated age to pick up photography since the camera has a delay before taking the camera and she’s off to photograph something else by the time it snaps the shot.  Explaining that to her seems pretty pointless since she continues to do it anyways.  It involves remaining still for a few extra seconds and that’s unheard of.

It’s still a neat idea and as the years go by, I’ll probably upgrade it every now and then as she learns how to use it and better understand it’s not just about pushing the button.  I’m interested to see what she photographs then, although the abstract streaks are kinda neat at times.

I also tagged on a couple of quick shots of little miss Zoe, 3 weeks old as of yesterday!

B90X – 90 Days To Read The Whole Bible

In just a couple of more days, myself and the staff @Mercy’s Cross will be starting the B90X (not P90X) challenge. For the following 90 days, the goal is to read the Bible, averaging around 16 chapters a day!

I was highly intrigued by it since I’ve never actually done a front-to-back read of it before. I’ve started once before, but started skipping around after the first few books.

If you’re up to the challenge, you can find a copy of the schedule at http://www.stevenfurtick.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/B90X.pdf .
Be sure to follow along and join in on Twitter, #B90X
